The new 26-bed Oncology Nursing Unit at Clara Maass Medical Center occupies one floor of an existing 1964 annex to the main hospital.  The new design specifically recognizes the needs of the patients and their families.  Attention was paid to the fact that oncology patients tend to have longer hospital stays than other kinds of patients.  To address this, the layout and finishes were designed to give the project a more hospitable feel.  Amenities were included to cater to the visitors that also tend to stay in the hospital for relatively longer periods of time.

A number of practical changes were made to ensure that the nursing unit remained efficient and orderly.  Pixis technology was included in the medication and clean utility rooms to help control inventory.  More space was given to storage needs overall.
